Prof. dr hab. John Peterson jest autorytetem w zakresie językoznawstwa ogólnego, historycznego i socjolingwistyki. Jego zainteresowania badawcze koncentrują się wokół obszaru północnych i środkowych Indii i obejmują języki indoaryjskie, mundajskie oraz drawidyjskie. Prof. Peterson jest autorem lub współautorem kilkudziesięciu publikacji w tym pionierskich gramatyk języków takich jak Kharia czy Sadri, które są wynikiem wieloletnich badań terenowych.
Abstract
In my talk I discuss the linguistic diversity of the middle and lower Gangetic Plains of northern India and the historical factors leading to this distribution. I argue that this region was once home to numerous languages from different families, but that this earlier high linguistic diversity has since completely disappeared, so that now only a few closely related languages are spoken here. I argue that the main reason for this drastic change is to be found in the strong hierarchical structures between the ethnic groups in the Gangetic Plains which arose through the urbanization of this region beginning around the 6th century BCE and the social changes which accompanied this. Finally, I show that my hypothesis accounts for the Indo-Aryan east-west divide without the need for assuming two waves of immigration of Indo-Aryan speakers into India, the so-called “inner-outer” hypothesis.
